Can a Boat Propeller Be Repaired Underwater?

Yes, but with a clarification. The propeller itself isn't repaired underwater. What happens underwater is the removal and reinstallation. A diver pulls the prop at your slip, sends it to a certified reconditioning shop, and reinstalls it once the work is done. Your boat stays in the water the entire time.

How the Process Works

The diver inspects the propeller in the water first. They assess the type and severity of damage and determine whether the prop can be reconditioned or needs full replacement. If reconditioning is the right path, the diver removes the propeller using a hydraulic puller, which applies even pressure without damaging the shaft or taper.

The prop goes to a reconditioning shop where it's straightened, balanced, and restored to manufacturer specifications. Professional shops use equipment like pitch gauges and computerised balancing machines to verify the repair. 

According to Mercury Marine, having a prop professionally reconditioned restores it to near-original performance in most cases, and is significantly cheaper than full replacement.

Once the prop is ready, the diver returns, reinstalls it, and torques everything to spec. If you have a spare prop, Barnacle Busters can install it during the turnaround so your boat isn't out of commission while the original is being repaired.

The alternative is hauling the boat to pull the prop, which means crane fees, yard storage, scheduling delays, and the boat sitting on blocks until the work is complete. For a job that a diver can handle in the water, that level of disruption and cost isn't necessary.

What Can't Be Done Underwater

The reconditioning itself happens at a shop on land. Straightening blades, welding material back onto damaged edges, and machine balancing all require dry, controlled conditions. If your prop needs PropSpeed applied before reinstallation, that also happens out of the water during the reconditioning window.

If the prop is damaged beyond repair, the diver can install a new one at your slip once it's sourced. Either way, your boat doesn't need to leave the water.
