Can My Boat Stay in the Water During a Hull Cleaning?

Yes. That's the whole point. A certified diver goes into the water at your slip, cleans the hull, inspects your running gear, and surfaces with a condition report. Your boat doesn't move.

This is a question Barnacle Busters hears often, especially from newer boat owners who assume cleaning the bottom means hauling out. It doesn't.

How In-Water Cleaning Works

The diver arrives at your marina with tools matched to your hull type and paint system. They work along the hull section by section, clean the propeller, shaft, struts, rudder, trim tabs, and through-hull fittings individually, then check your zinc anodes for depletion. The entire process typically takes one to two hours for a standard recreational boat.

When You Don't Need a Haul-Out

Routine hull cleaning, zinc replacement, propeller inspection, and minor underwater repairs can all be handled by a diver while your boat stays in the water. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection encourages responsible in-water hull maintenance as part of its clean boating guidelines. For most boat owners, in-water service eliminates the need to schedule yard time, arrange transport, and pay crane fees.

When You Do Need a Haul-Out

A full bottom paint job requires the hull to be dry. Replacing through-hull fittings, servicing seacocks, or repairing structural damage below the waterline all need to happen out of the water. PropSpeed application also requires a haul-out because the coating cures on a dry surface.

Most boats need a haul-out every 12 to 24 months for paint. Everything in between gets handled in the water. Haul-outs are for repairs, repaints, and coatings. In-water cleaning is for everything else.
