What's the Difference Between Underwater Maintenance and a Haul-Out?

They serve different purposes and cover different types of work. 

Underwater maintenance is the routine care that keeps your yacht running well between major service intervals. A haul-out is a periodic yard visit for work that can only happen with the hull out of the water. Most yacht owners need both, but at very different frequencies.

What Underwater Maintenance Covers

A diver comes to your slip and handles everything below the waterline while the yacht stays in the water. That includes hull cleaning, running gear inspection, zinc anode assessment and replacement, through-hull clearing, and a condition report after every visit. 

Minor issues like a depleted zinc or debris wrapped around the shaft get resolved on the spot.

This work happens monthly or on a schedule that fits your yacht's fouling rate. It's relatively quick, typically a couple of hours, and the yacht remains accessible and usable throughout.

What a Haul-Out Covers

A haul-out involves lifting the yacht out of the water at a boatyard using a travel lift or crane. Once on blocks, the full hull is exposed for work that can't be done underwater. The most common reason is a bottom paint job, which requires stripping, prepping, and recoating the hull on a dry surface.

Other haul-out work includes through-hull fitting replacement, seacock service, structural hull repair, osmotic blister treatment, and coating applications like PropSpeed. Marine surveyors also require a haul-out for pre-purchase inspections.

How They Work Together

Think of underwater maintenance as the regular upkeep that extends the interval between haul-outs. A yacht on a consistent monthly program keeps its paint in good condition longer, catches mechanical issues early, and arrives at the yard needing less corrective work.

Without regular underwater maintenance, the haul-out becomes more expensive. Paint that's been damaged by hardened barnacles needs more prep. Running gear that hasn't been inspected in months may need repairs. Zincs that were never replaced may have allowed corrosion damage to spread to the prop or shaft.

The two aren't interchangeable. They're complementary. Monthly dives handle the ongoing care. Annual or biannual haul-outs handle the bigger jobs. Together, they keep your yacht protected year-round.
