Proper cleaning protects your paint. It's neglect that destroys it. The confusion comes from a misunderstanding of how antifouling paint wears down. Most people assume the diver's tools are the problem. In practice, the bigger threat is what happens when marine growth is left on the surface too long.

How Antifouling Paint Works

There are two main categories. Ablative paints erode slowly over time, releasing biocides as the outer layer wears away. Hard paints form a durable shell that stays in place. Each requires a different cleaning approach. Diver associations even recommend using the softest effective cleaning media for the paint type and fouling level present.

Frequent Soft Cleaning vs Infrequent Hard Cleaning

A hull cleaned monthly with a soft brush loses almost no paint. The growth at that stage is biofilm and soft algae that comes off easily. A hull left for months is a different job. Barnacles cement themselves to the surface, and removing them requires stiffer tools that take paint with them.

Over a few years, the difference is significant. A boat cleaned monthly might get four or five years from a bottom job. A boat cleaned quarterly in the same water might need repainting every two years.

When Cleaning Can Cause Damage

If your coating is already past its effective life, the remaining paint is thin and brittle. Cleaning at that stage can strip what's left, but the paint was already failing. If the wrong tool is used on an ablative coating, too much material gets removed. These are technique problems, not arguments against cleaning.

The solution is a qualified diver who knows your paint type. If you're unsure about your coating's condition, ask your diver to assess it during the next visit. They can tell you how much life is left and whether it's time to plan your next haul-out.
