When Repair Makes Sense

The majority of prop issues fall into the repairable category. Bent blades, small dings along the leading edge, minor pitting from corrosion, and surface roughness from marine growth can all be corrected at a reconditioning shop. 

The shop straightens the blades, restores the pitch to factory specifications, smooths out imperfections, and machine-balances the finished product.

A properly reconditioned prop performs close to new. The cost is typically a fraction of replacement, and the turnaround is usually a few days. For boats with standard bronze or aluminium propellers, repair is almost always the more practical choice for moderate damage.

When Replacement Is the Better Option

Some damage goes beyond what reconditioning can fix. A blade that's cracked through its cross-section is a structural failure risk, even if it's welded and rebalanced. Significant material loss from a hard impact leaves the blade too thin to restore safely. A hub that's split or separated from the barrel can't reliably hold together under load.

Repeated reconditioning on the same prop also reaches a point of diminishing returns. Each repair cycle removes a small amount of material during the straightening and finishing process. 

After several rounds, the blades become thinner than the manufacturer's original tolerances. BoatUS recommends having a prop shop assess whether the remaining blade thickness can support another reconditioning cycle before committing to the repair.

If you're replacing the prop entirely, it's also a good opportunity to evaluate whether the current size and pitch are right for your boat. An incorrectly matched propeller can cause the same performance issues as a damaged one.

How to Decide Without Guessing

The best path is to have the prop removed and inspected by a qualified shop before making the call. A diver can pull it at your dock and send it out for assessment. 

The shop will tell you whether repair is viable, what it will cost, and how the repaired prop will compare to a new one in terms of performance and longevity.
