The 50 Percent Rule
The industry-standard threshold is 50% of the original mass. Once an anode has lost half its material, its ability to generate enough protective current drops off. It may still be attached, but it's no longer doing its job effectively. Waiting past this point leaves your running gear exposed.
A diver assesses this visually by comparing the anode's current size and shape to what a new one looks like. Experienced divers can judge depletion accurately without removing the anode from the boat.
Visual Warning Signs
Beyond size, the surface condition of the zinc tells a story. A healthy anode has a rough, pitted surface that shows active corrosion. That's what you want to see. It means the zinc is doing its job, drawing the galvanic current away from your propeller, shaft, and fittings.
A zinc that looks smooth, chalky white, or coated in a hard shell is not working properly. That coating insulates the anode from the water and blocks the electrochemical reaction. The zinc may appear to have plenty of mass left, but it's electrically inactive.

Uneven wear is another flag. If one zinc on the shaft is nearly gone while another on the rudder looks barely touched, the protective current isn't distributing evenly. That usually points to a bonding issue or a stray current source that needs investigation.
Signs You Might Notice From the Dock
You won't see your zincs from above, but you may notice the consequences of depleted ones. Pitting or discoloration on your prop when it's visible in clear water. A pinkish hue on bronze fittings. Unusual roughness on the shaft at the waterline. These are signs that corrosion has moved past the anodes and started affecting your running gear.
