How Long Does PropSpeed Last on a Boat?

PropSpeed typically lasts 12 to 24 months before it needs reapplication. Where your boat falls in that range depends on how often you use it, what your water conditions are like, and how well the coating was applied in the first place.

Barnacle Busters has been applying PropSpeed as an authorized facility for years, and we've seen the full spectrum of results. When the prep and application are done properly, most of our customers get at least 18 months out of a single application.

What Affects PropSpeed Lifespan

The biggest factor is boat usage. PropSpeed's foul-release mechanism depends on water movement across the coated surfaces. A boat that runs regularly creates enough flow to dislodge any organisms that try to settle. 

A boat that sits at the dock for weeks at a time gives growth a longer window to establish itself before the next outing. Boats that get used at least a few times a month consistently see longer coating life.

Water temperature and salinity also play a role. Warm, high-salinity water drives faster biofouling on every submerged surface, including coated ones. In tropical conditions, 

PropSpeed still outperforms uncoated metal by a wide margin, but it may reach the end of its effective life closer to the 12-month mark than the 24-month mark.

How to Tell When It Needs Reapplication

A healthy PropSpeed coating feels glassy smooth to the touch. When a diver runs a gloved hand over it during a hull cleaning visit, it should feel slick with minimal texture. 

As the coating ages, that slickness gradually diminishes. Growth starts holding on longer between uses, and the diver may notice organisms that aren't sliding off the way they used to.

The coating doesn't fail all at once. It degrades from the outer surface inward. Once it's worn through to the primer layer, the foul-release properties are gone and the metal is effectively unprotected. At that point, it's time to haul and reapply.

What Shortens Its Life

Improper cleaning is the most common way PropSpeed gets damaged prematurely. The coating should never be scrubbed with abrasive pads, scraped, or pressure washed. 

A light wipe with a soft cloth is all that's needed during routine maintenance. Aggressive cleaning strips the topcoat and exposes the primer.

According to PropSpeed's application guide, any marine growth on the coating should be wiped off with a non-abrasive cloth before it dries, particularly during haul-outs. Water blasting and scraping will damage the surface and eliminate its effectiveness.

Poor initial application also shortens lifespan. If the metal wasn't properly stripped and prepped, or if the primer and topcoat timing was off, the bond between layers is weaker. This is why using an authorized applicator matters.
