How Often Should Zinc Anodes Be Replaced on a Boat?

There's no universal calendar for zinc replacement. The standard rule is to replace an anode once it's lost about 50% of its original mass. How quickly that happens depends on your water conditions, your marina's electrical environment, and how long your boat stays in the water.

Replacement is Measured by Condition, Not Intervals

Zinc replacement is driven by wear, not by dates. A boat stored out of the water may never need a replacement. A boat in a busy marina with heavy shore power use might burn through anodes in weeks. 

Two boats in the same marina can show different depletion rates depending on their bonding systems, running gear materials, and how much stray current they're absorbing from neighbouring vessels.

The only reliable way to know if your zincs need replacing is to have a diver inspect them. If they're past 50%, they should come off.

What Speeds Up Depletion

Warm, high-salinity water is more electrically conductive, which means the galvanic reaction that wears zincs down happens faster. Boats connected to shore power face additional exposure through the dock's grounding system. Marinas with dense slip occupancy and heavy electrical activity are particularly aggressive on anodes.

The ABYC Standard E-2 for cathodic protection specifies that sacrificial anodes must maintain sufficient mass to provide continuous protection between inspections, and notes that inspection intervals should be suited to the boat's usage and location. In warm saltwater with active stray current, that means checking more often than the general annual guideline.

Why Monthly Inspections Matter

Because depletion rates vary so much, the safest approach is to have your zincs inspected on every hull cleaning visit. A diver who sees your boat monthly can track how fast each anode is wearing and replace them before they drop below the safe threshold.

They can also spot patterns. If one zinc is wearing significantly faster than the others, it might indicate a stray current issue or a bonding problem. That kind of insight only comes from regular observation.
