What Are the Signs My Yacht Needs Underwater Maintenance?

Your yacht tells you when something is wrong below the waterline. The signals aren't always dramatic, but they're consistent. Learning to recognise them early saves real money.

Higher Fuel Consumption (h2)

If your fuel burn has crept up at the same cruising speed and throttle setting, the hull is almost certainly fouled. Marine growth adds drag, and your engines compensate by burning more fuel. Track your consumption against your normal baseline. If the numbers are drifting upward without any change in how you're running the boat, it's time for a hull cleaning.

Lost Speed (h2)

A yacht that used to reach a certain top speed and now falls short is dealing with hull fouling, prop fouling, or both. Barnacles on the hull create drag the engines can't fully overcome. Fouling on the prop blades reduces thrust, so the same RPM delivers less speed. Sometimes the loss is gradual enough that the owner doesn't notice until someone else points it out.

Vibration at Speed (h2)

New or worsening vibration through the hull or helm at cruising speed usually points to the propeller. A bent blade throws the prop out of balance. Marine growth accumulating unevenly does the same. Fishing line wrapped around the shaft creates friction and oscillation. Any new vibration warrants an underwater inspection because, left alone, it accelerates wear on bearings and engine mounts.

Engine Overheating (h2)

If your engine temperature is running higher than normal, the raw water intake may be partially blocked by marine growth. Restricted flow means less cooling water reaching the engine. This is a problem that can escalate quickly. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission emphasises proper vessel maintenance as part of safe boating, and keeping your intakes clear is a basic part of that.

Visible Growth at the Waterline (h2)

If you can see algae, slime, or barnacles along the waterline from the dock, the growth below is worse. The waterline fouls fastest because of sunlight exposure, but it's an indicator of what's happening across the entire hull and running gear. Visible waterline growth means it's past time for a dive visit.
