What Causes Propeller Damage on Boats?
Propeller damage comes from two directions: sudden impact and gradual wear. Some causes are avoidable with careful navigation. Others are a natural consequence of keeping a boat in the water.

Striking Submerged Objects
This is the most common cause of sudden prop damage. Rocks, sandbars, submerged logs, crab trap lines, and storm debris can all make contact with a spinning propeller.
Even at low speed, the impact can bend a blade, chip a leading edge, or crack the metal. At higher speeds, the damage is often severe enough to require immediate attention.
Florida's waterways present particular hazards. Shifting sandbars near inlets, shallow flats in the ICW, and post-storm debris are all regular risks.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission tracks boating incidents statewide and consistently identifies grounding and submerged object strikes among the most reported causes of vessel damage. Paying attention to depth readings and navigating cautiously in unfamiliar water reduces the risk, but it doesn't eliminate it.
Fishing Line and Debris Entanglement
Monofilament line, rope, plastic bags, and other floating debris can wrap around the shaft between the prop and the strut. This restricts rotation, damages shaft seals, and creates friction that generates heat. If enough material accumulates, it can score the shaft surface or compromise the cutlass bearing.
A diver checks for entanglement on every service visit. Between visits, a sudden increase in vibration or a change in how the prop engages at low speed can indicate something is wrapped around the shaft.
Galvanic Corrosion
A propeller that isn't protected by functioning zinc anodes will gradually corrode through galvanic action. Bronze props develop pitting and dezincification, where the zinc content in the alloy gets stripped away, leaving the metal weakened and discoloured. Aluminium props pit and lose material at contact points.
Corrosion damage is slower than impact damage but just as destructive over time. A prop that's been quietly corroding for months may look serviceable from a distance but fail under load when a weakened blade can't handle the stress.
Marine Growth and Fouling
Barnacles and other hard-shelled organisms attach to propeller blades faster than they attach to a painted hull, because antifouling coatings don't bond well to metal.
Uneven growth across the blades throws the prop out of balance, creating vibration. Heavy barnacle buildup also changes the blade profile enough to reduce thrust and increase fuel consumption.
A monthly hull cleaning that includes the running gear prevents fouling from reaching the point where it affects prop performance.
Cavitation Erosion
Cavitation happens when water pressure drops low enough around a spinning blade to form vapour bubbles, which then collapse violently against the metal surface. Over time, this erodes the blade material and creates a rough, pitted texture.
Cavitation is usually caused by damaged blades, incorrect prop sizing, or insufficient clearance between the prop and the hull.
