What Happens If I Don't Replace My Boat's Zinc Anodes?
Once a zinc anode is fully depleted, the galvanic corrosion it was absorbing moves to the next available metal. That's your propeller, your shaft, your rudder fittings, or your struts. The damage is progressive, often invisible from the dock, and expensive to repair once it's advanced.

How the Damage Starts
Your boat has several different metals below the waterline, and saltwater acts as an electrolyte between them. Zinc anodes work by being the most electrically active metal in that circuit. Corrosion attacks the zinc first, leaving your running gear intact.
When the zinc is gone, the corrosion shifts to whatever metal is next in the galvanic series. On most boats, that's the propeller or the shaft.

What That Damage Looks Like
Early-stage corrosion shows up as pitting on the surface of your prop or shaft. The metal develops small craters that deepen over time.
On bronze propellers, you may notice a pinkish discolouration as the zinc content in the alloy gets stripped away, a process called dezincification. Stainless steel shafts can develop crevice corrosion at bearing contact points.
Left long enough, the damage progresses to cracking, material loss, and eventual mechanical failure. A propeller that's been weakened by corrosion can fracture under load. A shaft with significant pitting becomes prone to failure at speed.
What It Costs to Replace Them
A set of replacement zincs is one of the cheapest maintenance items on a boat. A new propeller is not. Neither is a new shaft, strut, or set of rudder fittings.
Corrosion damage that reaches through-hull fittings creates a safety issue on top of the expense, because compromised fittings can allow water intrusion.
The math is straightforward. Regular zinc replacement costs a small, predictable amount on each dive visit. Ignoring it risks repair bills that can run into thousands, plus the downtime while the work gets done.
The Fix Is Simple
Have your zincs inspected on every hull cleaning visit. A diver who checks them monthly will replace any that are past the 50% threshold before the corrosion has anywhere else to go. It's the simplest and cheapest form of protection your boat has.
