TOP 4 BOAT MAINTENANCE TIPS TO KEEP IT RUNNING ALL SUMMER

White yacht cruising through calm intracoastal waters in South Florida.

Summer in South Florida means long days on the water, and your boat should be ready for every single one of them. And these four maintenance habits keep your hull clean and underwater metal bits protected. These will also cover many of the questions we hear most often at Barnacle Busters. None of them are complicated, but skipping any of them tends to get expensive fast.

Check your propeller Before Every Outing

A propeller doesn’t need to be visibly damaged to cause problems. Even a small ding or a blade that’s slightly out of alignment creates vibration that travels through the shaft and into the drivetrain.  Left unchecked, that vibration loosens fittings, wears bearings, and turns a minor issue into a major repair bill.

Make it a habit to check your prop before you head out. Look for nicks, bent blades, and fishing line wrapped around the shaft. If something feels off at speed, don’t push through it. Underwater propeller repair lets a dive team pull, recondition, and reinstall your prop while the boat stays in the water, so there’s no haul-out involved.

Stay on Top of Monthly Hull Cleanings

Marine growth in South Florida waters doesn’t wait around. Warm temperatures and high salinity create ideal conditions for barnacles, algae, and other organisms to colonise your hull within weeks.

That buildup creates drag, which means your engine has to work harder to maintain the same speed. The result is higher fuel consumption and unnecessary strain on your running gear.

According to the BoatUS Foundation, deteriorated zincs and fouled props are among the most commonly overlooked items during routine boat maintenance. A consistent monthly boat bottom cleaning schedule prevents that buildup from reaching a point where it affects performance or damages your bottom paint.

Protect Your Prop and Shaft with PropSpeed

Even a freshly cleaned propeller is vulnerable to marine growth between service visits. Barnacles and salt scaling attach to the blades and shaft, creating drag that chips away at your speed and fuel economy over time. A foul-release coating stops that cycle before it starts.

PropSpeed is a silicone-based coating applied to props, shafts, rudders, and other underwater running gear. It creates a surface that marine organisms struggle to grip, so growth slides off instead of bonding.

Boat owners who’ve had it applied regularly report gaining up to three knots in speed and around ten percent in fuel savings. The formula is biocide-free, copper-free, and tin-free, which also makes it a better choice for the marine environment (and a staple in any boat maintenance tips!)

You can read more about how the coating works and when to reapply in our PropSpeed application guide.

Get Your Zincs Inspected Regularly

Sacrificial anodes, commonly called zincs, are small metal blocks mounted at various points below the waterline. They’re pretty self-explanatory; they absorb stray electrical currents caused by electrolysis so the propellers, shafts, struts, and rudders don’t have to. When the zincs corrode instead of your running gear, it’s working as intended.

The problem starts when zincs wear down and nobody replaces them. Once they’re depleted, electrolysis goes to work on the next available metal, and that’s your prop, your shaft, or your rudder.

Cracks, pitting, and eventual breakage follow. NOAA’s boating safety resources emphasize the importance of regular pre-departure inspections, and checking your zincs should be part of that routine.

A professional diver can inspect your zincs during a regular hull cleaning and swap out any that are past their useful life. For a deeper explanation of how anodes protect your boat, take a look at our zinc anode guide.

Keep Your Boat Ready, Not Just Running

There’s a difference between a boat that starts and a boat that’s actually ready for the water. These four habits, prop checks, clean hull, PropSpeed and fresh zincs are what separate a smooth season from one spent solving problems at the dock. They’re small investments of time that pay for themselves in terms of fuel savings and repairs. You also get more days out on the water!.

If you’re not sure where your boat stands, a single dive inspection can tell you what needs attention. Get in touch with Barnacle Busters today to schedule a hull check or set up a monthly cleaning plan.
